Feb. 12 - Winter Storm Watch Weather Advisory
The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) is closely monitoring what appears to be a historic winter weather event.
Current forecasts indicate a prolonged period of below-freezing temperatures, potentially accompanied by snow, sleet, and freezing rain. This weather has the potential to damage utility infrastructure and makes roads impassable.
Harris County is making preparation to open warming centers should they become necessary. Locations and other information will follow if and when the centers are opened.
Overview:
- An arctic air mass will plunge into SE Texas the next few days.
- A prolonged period of below-freezing temperatures.
- Near-record cold temperatures Tuesday morning.
- Periods of light freezing rain, drizzle, are possible through the weekend generally along and NW of Columbus to Huntsville to Livingston.
- Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are likely Sunday eve through early afternoon Monday.
- Travel Sunday Night through Tuesday will be hazardous. Wednesday through Thursday morning is also a concern.
- Another storm system coming on Wednesday. Impacts are expected.
- Pipes may freeze, burst with damage to infrastructure. Ice accretion, wind, and power demand could lead to power outages.
